All about the Celebration of ‘Good Friday’
Good Friday which is also known as ‘Holy Friday’ is marked as one of the most important religious festivals in the Christian calendar. This religious event is celebrated every year on the preceding Friday of Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is more than just hunting eggs because it is an ancient Christian festival even older than Christmas and therefore, it is taken to be the most important date in the Christian calendar. Usually, Good Friday falls between 20th March and 23rd April which may vary every year. The day is considered to be the black day for all Christians as it marks the death of Jesus Christ. In most of the countries around the world Good Friday is celebrated as an official holiday including in the states of Sabah and Sarawak, East Malaysia. The main religious practice of Malaysia may be Islam but, people belonging from other faith too have the full freedom of celebrating their religious occasions.
Significance of Good Friday
Good Friday not only marks the end of Christ’s pain and suffering on the cross but it also hold great significance in our lives. It is because it conveys the important message to the world that ‘an eye for an eye’ doesn’t hold true every time. You cannot conquer violence with hatred because it will only worsen the things. Hatred can be overcome only love, violence through non-violence and bad through good.
According to the belief of the Christians, the Christ came to this earth only to free people of their sins. But, he died in the hands of people because of hatred and thus, Good Friday comes as day of mourning over the loss of the life of Christ. And, therefore, every rites or rituals performed on this day is done with the feel of grieve and sorrow. It is a festival of mourning for the Christians.

- You may have wondered that why a Good Friday is called good. After all nothing good happened on this particular day. It is because according to your dictionary the meaning of the word ‘good’ is interpreted as ‘pious’ or ‘holy’. However, in other languages like in German, Good Friday means ‘Silent Friday’ or ‘Mourning Friday.’ While others claim that it means the corruption of God.
On the day of Good Friday most Christians spend their day offering prayer, fasting and in meditation for the pain and suffering that Christ went through on the cross. Apart from that there are many other customs and traditions that are followed by the people. On this day of sorrow even the bells at the church are not rung.
